Health Care Waste Assessment of 5 Zonal Hospitals

Assessment of safe health care waste management system in 5 zonal hospitals in each region with the support of World Health Organization from 15th March – 30th September 2015. The key objective of the project and the major findings are summarized as below:

Objective: The main objective of the project was to access the existing health care waste management of the five selected hospitals in the regional level.

To quantify the waste generated in the selected hospitals
To access the existing situation of health care waste management practices in the hospitals.
To access the occupational health status of the workers of the hospitals.
To identify the appropriate technology and provide recommendation for the upliftment of the existing practices of health care waste management of the hospitals.
The major findings of the activities are as follows. The waste generation rate varied from 1.18 kg per patient per day to 1.78 kg per patient per day in Seti Zonal Hospital and Koshi Zonal Hospital respectively and the national average health care waste generation is 1.35kg per patient per day; among which risk waste generated is 0.44 kg per patient per day.
